Data and scope

The openFDA food enforcement API serves recall information from FDA’s Recall Enterprise System. Records are published in Enforcement Reports after the products have been classified by hazard level. [1]

The API is updated weekly. FDA may correct previously published recall information. [1]

This site selects records whose product_description matches “dietary supplement” and whose report_date is January 1, 2024 or later, through the refresh date. Review the query on the Sources page. [2]

The list may miss supplement recalls whose FDA description doesn’t use the phrase “dietary supplement.” openFDA food enforcement records carry no product code to filter on, so these are identified supplement-related food enforcement records, not all dietary supplement recalls. [2]

Reuse and limitations

Unless otherwise noted, openFDA content and data are public domain under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 dedication. FDA requests credit when its material is reused. [3] [4]

openFDA says not to use its data for medical care decisions and to discuss product risks and benefits with a health provider. [1]

openFDA cautions against using these data for public alerts or tracking a recall’s lifecycle; published status is not updated after classification. [1]

Our presentation

Reason categories are site-assigned keyword groupings of FDA’s reason_for_recall text for each product recall, not FDA classifications or findings about a firm. Rules check drug claims, undeclared drug ingredients, unapproved or unlawful ingredients, contamination, potency, labeling and allergens, then other. [2]

FDA fields are reproduced as reported, with dates formatted as YYYY-MM-DD. Empty dates appear as “Not reported.” Use each record’s official link to review the source data. [2]
